Multi-core fiber is a type of optical fiber that consists of more than one core structure (with complex refractive index distribution in the cross-section) within a common cladding region. Different applications can be achieved based on the degree of proximity between the cores:
When the cores are spaced apart with an added blocking layer to minimize signal crosstalk between the cores, it can be used for long-distance optical communication with single-fiber space division multiplexing.
When the cores are close enough to induce optical wave coupling and interaction, it can be used for the fabrication of fiber-integrated photonic devices.
